Hey! I’m Seamus Platt and I’m a visual artist working in the realm of photo-imaging. I also work as a live music/press photographer. This is my first roll with the Hasselblad 500 C/M.

Before buying the Hasselblad 500c/m, I’d only used one medium format camera which was a Rolleicord III. I loved the Rolleicord but wanted something I could rely on a little more as I kept gravitating to the look as well as process of 120 film. I wanted something, sturdier, something with a brighter/larger focussing screen as well as interchangeable lenses/film backs. I guess I also wanted something I knew would last a long time. I got pretty swept up in the idea of an RZ/RB 67 but ended up deciding the 6x6 aspect ratio was more my thing.

I bought the camera from a contact I have in Sydney who sells cameras. When I bought the body w/ lens and back the seller threw in an original Hasselblad branded briefcase style camera bag, a shutter release cable and a few filters. Feels so funny walking into a shoot with a briefcase.

This first roll was shot as soon as the camera arrived. I remember taking it out of its packaging, picking it up, feeling its weight, hearing how loud the shutter was, looking through the massive waist level viewfinder, sliding the dark-slide, removing the back and lens. I was pretty overwhelmed with a mix of excitement and terror to be honest. I was so excited to shoot but also so scared I’d break it.

The roll is shot at my Dads place (where I had the camera shipped) and my share house just to test things out. I honestly can’t bear the thought of shooting for a project/client on the first roll… too much stress. Big ups to people who have the courage to do that. I knew I probably wouldn’t use the images so I shot on some Fuji Pro 400h because I don’t tend to use it in my practice (but still love it so much).

First pic is of my partner Monica from @sweater.curse. Love her so much, she always puts up with me when I get lost in visual art/camera related stuff. The next two are of my dad doing his thing. Contrary to my original plans, these pics are actually probably going to end up in a project I’m working on. I guess that’s how things tend to go?

The last one is of Monica and our roommate Vanessa (@keeskea) who is also amazing, messing around in our lounge room.

I am so impressed with the Hasselblad 500 c/m. I know I’m going to come away with something good once I’ve finished a shoot with this camera. It’s a really reassuring piece of machinery.

SO BASICALLY I’M IN LOVE.
